The works in this show are drawings dealing with the conversion, translation, and metamorphosis of a choreographic
practice. After fifteen years working predominantly as a solo improvising dancer, working with drawing (and in general the
two-dimensional) has been a way to challenge some of the fundamental limitations of performance and venerate the magic of
it. The works deal with western dance iconography, gesture, animals, delight, expression, and colour. The installation will be
on view from July 14 - August 1st with a special performance on July 25th in collaboration with musician Jonathan Adjemian.
Amelia is a dancer, choreographer, and multidisciplinary artist based eternally in Toronto and currently entering their second
year of a Masters in Visual Studies at the University of Toronto. Their work is about dance, animals, and science fiction, and
manifests as drawings, performance scores, and writing. Their work has been performed and supported across Canada and
internationally: notable engagements include OFFTA (Montréal), SEAD (Salzburg), Mile Zero Dance (Edmonton), and the Art
Gallery of Ontario. Amelia’s choreographic practice is deeply influenced by their work as an interpreter, and they have
performed in works by Susie Burpee, Willi Dorner, Julia Sasso, Menaka Thakkar, and Suzy Lake. Amelia was the Curator of
Dancemakers Centre for Creation from 2015-2019 and is the founder of Flowchart Performance Projects. Amelia was 2017
danceWEB recipient and a 2016 Toronto Arts Council Leadership Lab fellow. Amelia is also a practicing counseling Astrologer
with a private practice. They have never not lived within a stone’s throw of a great lake.
